Khateeb Project

The word Khateeb in Arabic means a preacher or speaker, and usually refers to the person giving the sermon at Friday Prayers. The Khateeb Rota was established by the MYF in the late 1980s providing regular speakers to prayer halls, universities, hospitals and schools across Manchester for Friday prayers.

Currently the MYF has 25 Khateebs covering a total of 8 mosques and prayer rooms, catering to an audience of more than 4000 Muslims every Friday, whose average age is23 years.

The MYF has now developed the Rota into a fully fledged Program in order to meet the growing needs of the commmuntiy, with the following goals in mind:

bullet

Recruiting and training new Khateebs

bullet

Publishing a Khateeb guide book

bullet

Holding regular Khateeb seminars and conferences

bullet

Recording sermons and making them available as digital downloads

Some advantages of the Khateeb Programme are:

bullet

Sending a positive, correct and consistent message to the thousands of worshippers it reaches.

bullet

A new method of Friday congregation management, in that by not having a regular imam, the polarisation of communities around sects and shaikhs etc is avoided.

bullet

Gives a sense of united community being multi-cultural multi-ethnic.

bullet

Encourages a British Muslim identity.

The MYF needs to be supported to continue with this coordinating role so that the number of Friday subscribers increases, especially amongst educational institutions such as colleges and schools, where facilitating regular worship  for the youth is a priority.
